UPDATE: The snow is melting! Climbing Saturday at the Leap. Camping at the Spires Saturday night and Climbing at the Spires on Sunday.
Experienced leaders needed
Inexperienced outdoor climbers welcome
Camping is free at the Spires. Get a fire permit at a Placerville fire station to be legal to burn.
Just another fun time at Phantom Spires. Forecast shows sun and 50s. http://classic.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/findweather/getForecast?hourly=1&query=95720&yday=62&weekday=Saturday
I would like to put together a trip to Lover Leap of all places. This is dependent on the weather and the snow cover, of course! I will be checking the area out this weekend. There are plenty of fallback locations if the Leap is a “no go”. Like, Pie shop, the Spires, Sugar Loaf, and even CRG. I am not dead set on Saturday, so your input and the weather could change it to Sunday.
Lovers Leap is an intermediate skill climbing area. However, depending on those attending, I might be comfortable with those of you that have only climbed outside a few times joining in.
I’m considering doing a trip up to Cisco Butte I-80 at Eagle Lakes Rd. and climbing the NW face. I’ve done this trip a few times in the past couple of years and it’s always rewarding. Ice Axe, Crampons, Snowshoes, … the mountaineer’s arsenal. Ability to self belay. Practice snow climbing. Descend via Southwest side. Alternate and somewhat easier climb is to ascend via SW side. Meet in YC or Marysville and head up Hwy. 20 to Eagle Lakes Rd.

Was thinking about goin’ back after all this cold & rain.
This pic is from the same time last year. Weird weather!!
Well, anyway, climb on!!
novice friendly top rope and trad leads have rope and gear
Want to get together and take advantage of the great weather? Give me a call and we can meet up this Saturday. My internet access is very limited at the moment. Please call me to discuss and/or RSVP.
Thanks,
Andrew

This is a last minute event. I didn’t want to plan this event early and be at the mercy of the weather. I won’t lie, it will be a bit cold…. but the sun will be shining! Might be your last chance to climb Donner Pass without all the approached covered in a ton of snow! For me, its my last climb of 2011 and I want it to be at my favorite spot! I’m camping tonight and climbing tomorrow. I plan to start climbing around 9am but it will be cold so I encourage others to wait until at least 11am before climbing. I will be near the Star wall or the Black wall. I get good cell coverage and think it best for everyone to call me at 530-933-89 two eight if you show up early. Otherwise, I will see you in the parking lot by school of rock (west of the bridge) at 11am.
We will be climbing 5.8 through 5.9 Trad to set up TR (Top Rope) and will hit routes for sport climbs 5.10 – 5.12a with some being a mix of trad and sport. We can setup TR for all routes if someone completes the lead. I don’t recommend this event for beginners but if you want to try, we will help!
Items to bring: cold weather clothing, harness, belay device, climbing shoes, and some warm boots or slippers to belay in. If you have a dynamic rope, bring that along with any cams, nuts, stoppers, etc.
Directions and details can be found here
There is 4 of us attending so far….
