About

North State Rock Climbing and Mountaineering

Owner: Arin Finch

Future plans: To provide outdoor adventure guide services (AMGA Certified) as well as hosting outdoor rock climbing events and instruction for individual or small groups.

Experience: I’ve been climbing and mountaineering off and on for the last 10 years but it wasn’t until 2008 that I recieved the proper training to where I could do it safely and with the proper knowledge while on or off duty. I’ve been climbing in the Northern California area for a year now. I’m not a naturally talented rock climber but I can lead most 5.10′s and follow most 5.11′s. I prefer lead/trad climbing with sport climbing a close second.

I have a love for the mountains! When I’m not working, rock climbing or hanging out with the family, I’m exploring or climbing a mountain. I currently have 19 years in the US Air Force. I have learned the majority of my mountaineering skills through my military training and experiences. I have traveresed glaciers and conducted crevasse rescues in Northern California , Alaska, and conducted missions at high altitude in Afghanistan. Most of my experience has been gained through military training over the last 10 years with the majority coming from the US Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Training Center located in the high sierras (Pickel Meadows/Bridgeport). The instructors at the USMCMWTC are top knotch and there is always something more to learn no matter what. The Pickel meadows climbing wall is outstanding.

I have attended the following formal courses:

- Army Mountain Warfare Training – Basic Course in Vermont

- Marine Corps Basic Mountaineering Courses for specialty career field three times (Assistant Instructor Oct-Nov 2011)

- Marine Corps Mountain Leader Course – Pickel Meadows

- Marine Corps Assault Climber Course – Pickel Meadows

The NSRC Meetup Group: www.meetup.com/northstatercockclimbers

We are a group of avid rock climbers and mountaineers in the northern California and western Nevada areas. We have members from all walks of life and all skill levels. We have active duty military, retired military, college students, and everyone else to include their kids. We tend to meet as far north as Shasta and as far south as Napa. We meet in Tahoe, Bishop, Yosemite, Donner, Truckee, and sometimes as far as southern Utah. We are a very casual group with an emphasis on fun while always having safety in mind. We always take the time to educate each other and share new ideas/techniques. We believe in people helping people, sharing knowledge and helping each other as best we can. Many of us have extra gear to use during our events. If you don’t have a rope, no problem, we have extra. Don’t be discouraged when you see our base location as Marysville. We thought about making it Sacramento but we wanted to build a member base north of Sacramento as well. It is true, we climb all over the west coast, but the majority of our climbs are North and South Lake Tahoe. We don’t require monthly membership dues but we do accept donations to help off-set our costs to run our meetup page as well as our homepage here at nsrcm.com. We see too many meetup groups turned into a profit making businesses. NSRC will not do that to our members! “Climb on Climbers!”
